Following the first study phase (see News 29), there followed a phase of investigation and sampling on the various sites, which saw the collection of representative samples of granitoid rocks (at the Calabrian sites) and mining materials (currently mined and not) at the Tuscan mining sites (granitoid rocks/riolites with varying degrees of alteration/ limestone).
These samples were evaluated on the basis of their suitability/conformity for use in the ceramic industry and to assess the potential use of as yet uncharacterised and potentially suitable mining by-products. In addition, a comparative investigation was carried out between the newly characterised materials and those already on the market.
This activity thus provides a brief overview of the Italian situation regarding the exploitation of secondary raw materials to be used as an important source to replace currently scarce raw materials.
