On July 8, during the conference “Riabitare Buddusò” (Re-inhabiting Buddusò), the University of Sassari (UNISS) presented some of the results, still in progress, of the REDiRECT project, with particular reference to the activities of OR 7. The presentation was part of a discussion dedicated to the future of the territory and the enhancement of its material and cultural resources.
The conference was organized as part of the Spirit of Rocks event, promoted by the Municipal Administration of Buddusò with the aim of identifying and launching new strategies for the revitalization of the historic center and the surrounding area. Among the central themes of the initiative, specific attention was given to local landscapes and granite quarries, elements of identity and key resources for the development of the territory.
During the event, professionals and experts from various fields, together with local stakeholders, offered food for thought on the productive, food, artistic-cultural, and community opportunities linked to the recovery of stone and quarrying sites. The discussion highlighted the potential of these assets as levers for generating new forms of local economy and social cohesion.
In its contribution, UNISS illustrated how the results of the REDiRECT project can support territorial regeneration processes based on the principles of the circular economy. The focus was on the possibilities of reactivating resources that are currently abandoned, transforming them into elements capable of fueling new production chains and strengthening the link between the built environment, landscape, and community.
UNISS also involved students from the Architecture course, emphasizing the educational and design value of approaches that integrate sustainability, material recovery, and territorial vision. In particular, the urban and territorial potential of circular projects and processes was highlighted, which, starting from disused materials, can contribute to the economic and social reactivation of local communities.
The experience presented at the conference showed how university research can engage with the territory, supporting development strategies based on industrial symbiosis and the enhancement of local resources. REDiRECT's participation in ‘Riabitare Buddusò’ is thus part of a broader process of dissemination and dialogue with local and regional actors.
A news report dedicated to the event is available, which explores the theme of the enhancement of Sardinian granite.
